Homosexuality in Spain
In spite of its Catholic past and being home to the notorious Inquisition, Spain has surprising emerged as a very open-minded country with a vibrant gay culture. Spain has allowed gay communities to flourish since the demise of the fascist dictator Franco in 1975 and has steadily marched toward more progressive policies and laws. This has created immense tension with the Catholic Church and Spain’s Conservative right wingers but the Spanish public has been very supportive of progressive changes.
